We are deeply saddened to report on the passing of Rabbi Yitzchak Vorst, OBM, survivor of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, and the senior Shliach in the Netherlands. He passed away on Wednesday, 27 Elul, 5783.
He was 85.
Yitzchak was the son Rabbi Levi and Mrs. Tzipporah Chana Vorst. He was profoundly shaped by the events of WW2. Along with his family, he endured the internment at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. His mother didn’t make it, she perished in a German freight train car just before they were liberated by the Russians.
In the 5720s, Rabbi Vorst emigrated to Israel to work as an engineer to help build the new port of Ashdod. There he came into contact with Chabad.
In 5724, he and his wife Dobba founded Chabad of the Netherlands and built up the Jewish community, where they have served as shluchim for nearly 60 years and founded many of the Jewish institutions that serve Holland’s Jewish community.
He is survived by his wife, Doba and children Mrs. Chana Kalmenson – Aubervilliers, France; Rabbi Dovid Bentzion Vorst – Brunoy, France; Rabbi Yehuda Vorst – Rotterdam; Mrs. Sarah Katzman – The Hague; Menucha Romano – Eretz Yisroel; Mrs. Nechama Cohen – Yerushalayim; Rabbi Menachem Vorst – Charlotte, NC; Mrs. Bracha Leah Weingarten – Lansing, Michigan; Mrs. Chaya Benjaminson – Crown Heights; Mrs. Rivkah Galperin – Windsor, Ontario; Mrs. Devorah Esther Levin – Nijmegen; and Mrs. Mushky Lent – Manchester, England.
