We are deeply saddened to report on the passing of Rabbi Sholom Ber Butman, OBM, an Elder Chossid, Mashpia and Shliach in Tel Aviv. He passed away on Friday, 10 Menachem Av, 5783.

    He was 88.

He was born in 5794 in Moscow, to his parents, Rabbi Shneur Zalman and Yehudit Butman. His mother was the daughter of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, great-grandson of the Tzemach Tzedek.

When he was young, his family escaped the Soviet Union, arriving in Paris in 5706 (1946). It was the first time he met the Rebbe.

After a number of years, his family immigrated to the US.

He was among the 12 bochurim sent to console the Kfar Chabad community, following the devastating Shafrir terror attack that claimed the lives of one adult and five children and another 10 wounded.

In 5717, he was dispatched to England to establish the UK’s Lubavitch Youth Organization (Tzeirei Agudas Chabad). Later that year, he married Devora, the daughter of Rabbi Shmerel Gurary. The couple settled in Crown Heights.

Rabbi Butman worked full-time in the textile business but remained involved in Jewish activism.

The couple moved to Eretz Yisrael, he was appointed gabbai of the Nachalas Binyomin Shul in Tel Aviv, while still working full time.

In 5771, Rabbi Butman made headlines when he became the oldest person to open a new Chabad House at the age of 77, in Tel Aviv.

He is survived by his children Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Butman – Lod, Israel; Rabbi Yochanan Butman – Chadera, Israel; Rabbi Yehuda Butman – Ramat Hasharon, Israel, and Mrs. Michla Segal – Crown Heights; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his siblings Rabbi Shmuel Butman – Crown Heights; Mrs. Leah Kahn – Crown Heights; and Mrs. Miriam Swerdlow – Crown Heights.

He was predeceased by his son Rabbi Yisroel Boruch Butman, shliach to Naharia, Israel, in 5774.

The levaya was held on Friday morning in Tel Aviv to Har Hazeisim for burial.

    Baruch Dayan Ha’emes.
