We are deeply saddened to report on the passing of Rabbi Moshe Herson, the Rebbe’s Shliach to New Jersey and dean of Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim in Morristown, New Jersey. He passed away on Thursday, 23 Teves, 5785.
He was 90.
Moshe Herson was born on Chof Tammuz in 5694 (1934), in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. At the age of 15, he went to study abroad at the central Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim in Crown Heights, where he was also ordained to the rabbinate.
During his years of study at the yeshiva, he was privileged to assist the Rebbe’s secretariat in translating letters that came to the Rebbe in Spanish.
In 5717, he was sent by the Rebbe as part of Merkos Shlichus Venezuela and Cuba, along with Rabbi Binyamin Klein, and before their departure, he entered the Rebbe’s Yechidus.
After his marriage to his wife Pearl, he was appointed by the Rebbe in 1965 as Shliach to New Jersey, and immediately upon arriving there, he began establishing Chabad Mosdos in the state, led by the yeshiva and Semicha institute, which developed over the years until, at its peak, it reached 280 students per year.
Rabbi Herson was appointed in 1985 by the Rebbe as a member of Agudas Chassidei Chabad, and within its framework worked to return the books stolen from the Aguch Library.
In 1986, together with Rabbi Berel Shemtov, Rabbi Simcha Zirkind, Rabbi Shmuel Kaplan, and Rabbi Yisroel Shmotkin joined forces to establish the Machne Yisroel Development Fund.
After his marriage to his wife Pearl, he was appointed by the Rebbe in 1965 as Shliach to New Jersey, and immediately upon arriving there, he began establishing Chabad Mosdos in the state, led by the yeshiva and Semicha program, which developed over the years until, at its peak, reaching 280 students per year.
Since being sent to New Jersey, he has established an empire of institutions, including 50 Shuls, a Cheder and Semicha Yeshivah, and dozens of Chabad Houses in the state.
Rabbi Herson was predeceased by his wife, Pearl, a little more than three weeks ago.
Rabbi Herson is survived by their children: Rabbi Asher Herson (Rockaway, NJ); Sara Brafman (Morristown, NJ); Rabbi Mendy Herson (Basking Ridge, NJ); and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His Levaya will take place today, passing by 770 at 12:30 PM, followed by burial at 1:30 PM at Montefiore Cemetery.
