R’ Pinye Korf, 86, OBM
It is with great sorrow that we inform you of the passing of famed mashpia, Rabbi Refoel Pinchas (Pinye) Korf at 86 years old. He embodied the quintessential Chossid, being a true example for thousands of chassidim. It is with great sorrow that the news of the death of famed mashpia Rabbi Refoel Pinchas (Pinye) Korf at 86 years old.
He was born in Kharkov, Russia, on 20 Iyar 5695 (1935) to famed mashpia Rabbi Yehoshua and Mrs. Chaya Rivka Korf. His family stayed in Poking, Germany after escaping the Soviet Union. He was one of the first bochurim in Poking’s Tomchei Temimim, later moving on to Brunoy, France, where he studied with R’ Nissan Namanov. In 5733 he went to study in 770 by the Rebbe MH”M.
R’ Pinye also studied in Tomchei Temimim – Montreal.
After marrying his wife Chaya, the couple moved to Newark, where R’ Pinye was appointed mashpia in the yeshiva which would subsequently move to Morristown, NJ. The couple also lived several years in Montreal, where R’ Pinye taught as well.
The Korfs ultimately settled in Crown Heights, where R’ Pinye was appointed a position as mashpia in Oholei Torah.
R’ Pinye was heavily involved in work of hafatzos hamaayanos, being an active member of Tzach and being involved in F.R.E.E., the organization responsible for reaching out to Russian-speaking Jews.
R’ Pinye also held many shiurim in various Jewish communities throughout New York, including Williamsburg, something which stirred much controversy amongst the locals. In Sivan 5743, he was attacked after his weekly Tanya shiur, his beard being ruthlessly cut off by his atackers.
The Rebbe addressed the incident in a sicha the following Shabbos.
Following the passing of R’ Itche Springer, R’ Pinye assumed the role of mashpia in 770.
R’ Pinye was hospitalized last year following his contracting of COVID-19. While chassidim the world around were praying for him throughout the last year, his condition fluctuated. He passed away Tuesday night.
He is survived by his wife Mrs. Chaya Korf and their children, Rabbi Leibel Korf – Los Angeles, CA; Rabbi Pesachya Korf – Crown Heights; Rabbi Benche Korf – Miami Beach, Florida; Rabbi Berel Korf – Manchester, England; Rabbi Mendy Korf – Toronto, Canada; Yosef Yitzchok Korf – Brooklyn, NY; Mrs. Chani Marinovsky – Kfar Daniel, Eretz Yisroel; Mrs. Rochel Landa – Toronto, Canada; Mrs. Nechama Dina Nemirovsky – Crown Heights; Mrs. Batsheva Gruzman – Migdal, Eretz Yisroel; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived as well by his siblings Rabbi Avrohom Korf – Miami, Florida and Mrs. Batsheva Shemtov – Oak Park, Michigan.
