We are deeply saddened to report on the passing of Mrs. Devorah Greenberg, OBM, the matriarch of a large Chabad Family, most of whom serve as Shluchim across the globe.
She was 85.
Born in the Soviet Union to her parents who risked everything with mesiras nefesh, Rabbi Aharon and Nechama Leah Chazan. Her father was one of the leaders ofthe underground Chadarim. Their home even had a mikvah and As Purim came around, their home was transformed into a matzah bakery for the Pesach.
“They weren’t only religious Jews who came to our house to buy matzah,” Devorah Greenberg once said. “Everybody looked for it. They’d ask each other, ‘Do you know where I could find some? I want to buy.’ That’s how they heard about my father’s matzah; it was all word of mouth.”
“They baked the matzah in a private house. My father would buy enough for the whole Pesacḥ.” She added.
in the 5710’s she married R’ Moshe Greenberg, who was just released from Siberia for trying to escape the USSR, following the death of Stalin.
Once they were able to immigrate to the Eretz Yisroel, in 5726, they settled in Bnei Brak. Her father continued his activism to care for and educate Russian-speaking immigrants.
In Israel, Moshe and Devorah both continued to live with the same fire for Yiddishkeit as when they were in the Soviet Union. moshe took on the local Tzach branch in Bnei brak
She is survived by her children, the majority of whom serve as shluchim in locations around the world: Rabbi Naftali Greenberg – Lod, Eretz Yisroel; Mrs. Rochel Levertov – Austin, Texas; Rabbi Yisroel Greenberg – El Paso, Texas; Rabbi Yoske Greenberg, – Anchorage, Alaska; Rabbi Zushe Greenberg, – Solon, Ohio; Mrs. Bassie Shemtov – Crown Heights; Rabbi Schneor Greenberg – Commerce, Michigan; Rabbi Shmulik Greenberg – Clark County, Vancouver, Washington; Rabbi Baruch Greenberg – Oceanside, Vista, California; Rabbi Shalom Greenberg – Shanghai Jewish Center, China; Rabbi Avraham Greenberg – Shanghai, China; Mrs. Chaya Wolff – Odessa, Ukraine; Mrs. Rivka Azimov – Neuilly, Neuilly-sur-Seine, France; Mrs. Shterni Wolff, – Hannover, Germany; Mrs. Esther Shaikevitz – Kfar Chabad, Eretz Yisroel; Rabbi Chaim Greenberg – Beitar Illit, Eretz Yisroel; Mrs. Chava Kastel – Rechovot, Eretz Yisroel; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
