We are deeply saddened to report on the passing of Harav Dovid Shochet, one of the senior Chabad Rabbonim worldwide, who served as President of the Toronto Rabbinical Council and a member of Vaad Rabbonei Lubavitch. He passed away on Sunday night, 18 Shvat, 5784.

    He was 91.

He was born in the Basil, Switzerland, in 5692, 1932 to his parents, Rabbi Dov Yehuda and Sara Sosha Schochet. his father was a noted Talmid Chacham, served as Rov in Basil, the Hague and later Toronto. While living in Toronto his family was niskarev to Lubavitch. and enrolled in Tomchei Temimim in Montreal and later in 770.

He later said in a interview on why he chose Lubavitch, “But what really decided me was the pride in being Jewish that the Lubavitch chasidim exhibited. In Europe, many observant Jews tried to blend in – for which you couldn’t blame them, considering the degree of anti-Semitism that existed. They would cover their heads, although not with a yarmulke which would make them stand out; they’d wear a cap or a hat that looked like every other person’s headgear. But Lubavitcher chasidim openly wore yarmulkes and even went on the streets with the strings of their tzitzit hanging out. That impressed me very much.”

After the Kfar Chabad massacre, he was part of the group the rebbe sent to visit and encourage Anash in Eretz Yisroel. For nearly a month, the group visited all over Eretz Yisroel to give speeches and encourage.

He married his wife Batsheva on 3 Nissan 5717 in the courtyard of 770 and was zoche that the Rebbe was mesader kiddusin. Even before his marriage, he worked in the Chinuch in Toronto and even rented a house nearby, and shortly after his wedding, they traveled to Toronto, and began his work in Chinuch.

Over the years he was oppointed as Rov of the community and as a member of the Vaad Rabbonei Lubavitch. For over 50 years he served as one of the leading Rabbonim in North America.

He is survived by his wife Rebbetzin Batsheva Schochet, and their children Rabbi Yossi Schochet – Toronto, ON, Mrs. Batya Lisker – Miami, FL, Mrs. Rochie Diena – Toronto, ON, Mrs. Chana Weisberg – Pomona, NY, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his siblings Mrs. Ruth Averbuch of Crown Heights, Mrs. Batya Wagner – Toronto, Mrs. Amina Newman – Long Beach, CA, Mr. Joseph Daniel Schochet – Toronto, Rabbi Elisha Shochet – Toronto, Rabbi Ovadia Schochet – Miami, FL. and Rabbi Ezra Schochet – Los Angeles, CA.

Levaya will be held on Monday in Toronto, beginning at the Chabad shul at 770 Chabad Gate at approximately 12:30 PM.

Shiva will be at the Schochet home:
42 Milner Gate, Thornhill, ON L4J 2N4, Canada
