Ad Mosai? With great sorrow, we report the tragic murder of Rabbi Zvi Kogan, HY”D, Shliach in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. His body was found Sunday morning in Dubai, after being abducted on Wednesday and killed on Thursday afternoon.
He was 28.
Rabbi Kogan grew up in Yerushalayim in a Litvishe family, became close to Chabad, and became active in the Jewish community in the UAE.
In March 2022, he married Rivky Spielman, a Lubavitcher from Crown Heights who is the niece of Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg, HY”D, the Chabad Shliach who was killed in the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008.
The Kogan’s worked in Abu Dhabi together with several Shluchim under Shliach Rabbi Levi Duchman, the chief rabbi of the Jewish community in the UAE.
Suspicion of his abduction began when he did not show up for his scheduled meetings on Wednesday.
After coordinating with international security agencies, including the Mossad, Rabbi Kogan’s body was found on Sunday morning in Dubai.
It is believed that Rabbi Kogan was attacked by three Uzbeks, who are suspected of having been hired by Iran. The three followed Kogan from his workplace, the kosher supermarket in Abu Dhabi,
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said “I would like to express deep outrage – on behalf of myself, all members of the Government, all citizens of Israel and the entire Jewish people – over the abduction and murder of Zvi Kogan, may G-d avenge him.
“This murder was carried out in the UAE. The murder of an Israeli citizen and a Chabad emissary, is an abhorrent antisemitic terrorist attack. On your behalf, I also send heartfelt condolences to the Kogan family. The State of Israel will use all means, and will deal with these murderers, and those who dispatched them, to the fullest extent of the law. None of them will get away.”
