Historic Yerushalayim Kollel Needs Your Help!

The kollel, located in Yerushalayim’s Old City and is directed by Rabbi Chaim Shalom Dietsch, was first established by the Rebbe Maharash. While Lubavitchers lived in the Old City since the time of the Tzemach Tzedek, despite having their own shul, the community never had a place dedicated to learning Chassidus. This was primarily due to extreme poverty the Jewish community experienced at that time under the Turks. The situation in Eretz Yisrael is financially very poor. Businesses were ruined by the government. People were driven into poverty by the previous administration. The kollel is turning to the worldwide Lubavitch community to help continue its vital operation • Full Story, Donate

Rabbi Chaim Shalom Dietsch shlit”a is fundraising via Charidy for the support of his kollel in the Old City of Jerusalem. He needs your help.

The Kollel was first established by the Rebbe Maharash. While Lubavitchers lived in the Old City since the time of the Tzemach Tzedek, despite having their own shul, the community never had a place dedicated to learning Chassidus. This was primarily due to extreme poverty the Jewish community experienced at that time under the Turks.

As such, Jews depended heavily on money from overseas simply to have what to eat and to pay rent with.

Lubavitchers in those days would learn in yeshivos of the Litvish, which was of the highest caliber; however, their schedule didn’t allow for the learning of Chassidus or davening in the Chassidic fashion. This situation greatly concerned the Rebbeim, for the local Chabad community was becoming more and more like their Yerushalmi neighbors who learned nigleh almost exclusively.

Since living conditions were so precarious none of the Chabad institutions would take on the extra burden of supporting a kollel for the study of Chassidus.

Finally, under the Rebbe Maharash a Kollel was established to learn Chabad Chassidus in the Old City. In Menachem Av of 1879, a second floor was completed over the Chabad shul with the generous help of Rabbi David Sasson from Bombay, a grandson of the Tzadik the Ben Ish Chai.

David Sasson paid for the building in the name of his wife Leah (bas Farcha).

Because of the virus, finances for the Kollel have become strained and so, under the direction of Rav Dietsch shlit”a, a Charidy fundraising drive was launched to support the students learning there. This Kollel is very special, for it not only trains future shluchim, but it also trains future Rabbonim for the learning is exceptionally high, Baruch Hash-m. Assisting Rav Dietsch are Rav Yosef Zvi Segel shlit”a and Rav Shalom Segel shlit”a.

The situation in Eretz Yisrael is financially very poor. Businesses were ruined by the government. People were driven into poverty by the previous administration. As such we are forced to look abroad for help at this critical time.
