Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Phuket on Shabbos for an openly antisemitic rally targeting the Jewish community and Chabad, with protesters demanding that the Thai government shut down Chabad Houses across the country and expel Israeli-linked groups.
The rally, held under the banner “Take Back Our Thailand,” comes amid a growing wave of hostility toward Jews and Israelis in the country. Speakers accused Chabad and Israeli nationals of illegal activity and called for their removal from Thailand.
The protest follows a demonstration outside the Chabad House in Patong in September, where hundreds gathered and anti-Israel and anti-Jewish slogans were heard. That protest led to the cancellation of a planned Rosh Hashanah meal for hundreds of Israelis amid fears of violence.
The latest escalation comes as Thai authorities investigate companies and property connected to Rabbi Yosef Chaim Kantor, head Shliach to Thailand, whose Thai citizenship was revoked earlier this week over allegations that he continued using his American passport after becoming a Thai citizen in 2013.
Chabad of Thailand said it is challenging the citizenship decision through legal channels and that Chabad Houses throughout the country continue to operate as usual.
