    NY State Budget Includes Many Priorities for Yeshivas and Families

    It took a full extra month and five extensions, but Governor Kathy Hochul and legislative leaders have finally come to an agreement on a 2023-24 budget. The $229 billion document includes many items that were the focus of Agudath Israel’s advocacy efforts and are beneficial to yeshivas and their families. These provisions include security funding, free meals for school children, an expansion of a child tax credit, and the saving of a program that currently provides close to $92 million to Jewish schools • Full Story

    Albany Supreme Court Strikes Down Part of New State Education Department Regulations

    The Albany Supreme Court ruled Thursday afternoon that important parts of the recently enacted substantial equivalency regulations exceeded the State Education Department’s authority.  Judge Christine Ryba therefore struck from the regulations the provisions that imposed penalties on parents and yeshivas if SED determined that the school was not substantially equivalent • Full Story

    NYS Board of Regents Schedules Monday Vote on Private School Regulation

    A pivotal vote will be held in New York State this Monday that will heavily affect how much oversight the government will have over Yeshivos. The vote, held by the New York State Board of Regents will decide if the government can reject a private school’s secular studies curriculum. If approved, the regulations would require that Yeshivos either have an approved Regents program, or be subject to a review by the local school authority • Full Story

    New York Bans Smoking in Public Parks, Playgrounds and Beaches

    Governor Kathy Hochul today signed legislation (S.4142/A.5061) prohibiting smoking in all state-owned beaches, boardwalks, marinas, playgrounds, recreation centers, and group camps. Smoking in these designated areas will be punishable with a civil fine of $50 • Full Story
