The $229 billion document includes many items that were the focus of Agudath Israel’s advocacy efforts and are beneficial to yeshivas and their families. The Albany Supreme Court ruled Thursday afternoon that important parts of the recently enacted substantial equivalency regulations exceeded the State Education Department’s authority. Judge Christine Ryba therefore struck from the regulations the provisions that imposed penalties on parents and yeshivas if SED determined that the school was not substantially equivalent • Full Story
A pivotal vote will be held in New York State this Monday that will heavily affect how much oversight the government will have over Yeshivos. The vote, held by the New York State Board of Regents will decide if the government can reject a private school’s secular studies curriculum. Governor Kathy Hochul today signed legislation (S.4142/A.5061) prohibiting smoking in all state-owned beaches, boardwalks, marinas, playgrounds, recreation centers, and group camps. Smoking in these designated areas will be punishable with a civil fine of $50 • Full Story
