New York City has lifted its curfew, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Sunday.
In a tweet Sunday morning (local time), de Blasio touted the decline in violence at protests across the weekend, and declared the immediate lifting of the city’s curfew.
“New York City: We are lifting the curfew, effective immediately. Yesterday and last night we saw the very best of our city.”
“Tomorrow we take the first big step to restart. Keep staying safe. Keep looking out for each other.”
Tens of thousands of demonstrators rallied across the city Saturday night in protests which largely avoided the mass violence, looting, and arson which marked previous mass gatherings.
Demonstrators did violate the city’s curfew, and in some cases, blocked traffic. Nevertheless, Mayor de Blasio moved to lift New York’s curfew order, imposed last week, a day early. The curfew order had been set to expire on the morning of June 8th.
