Wednesday, the 8th of Cheshvan, Rabbi Yehoshua S. Hecht, the Rov of Beth Israel of Westport/Norwalk, Chabad and Presidium Member of the Rabbinical Alliance of America met with HaGaon Rav Shlomo Moshe Amar, Yerushalayim’s Sephardic Chief Rabbi at his office in Yerushalayim, Israel.
They discussed the Kosel controversy being provoked by liberal movements and the reform and conservative stream who are demanding recognition and access at the Kosel, by advocating for mixed gender prayer areas at the Western Wall in Yerushalayim. These demands contravene established and codified Jewish law and tradition adhered to at Judaism’s most sacred site.
Rav Amar noted that the support of the Rabbinical Alliance of America is very helpful and requested that all who serve in the American Orthodox Rabbinate openly voice and publicize their support of adherence to Halacha at the Kosel and all of the areas surrounding it.
Rav Amar noted that altering any of the time sanctified customs of the Kosel would be a tragic offense against the Torah and the sacred traditions of the Jewish people adhered to for millennia. Rav Amar noted with deep pain and anguish that the unreasonable demands for a mixed gender prayer area at Judaism’s most venerated site is really an attack against Torah and Mitzvah observance.
Yerushalayim’s’ Chief Sephardic Rav appreciates the close working relationship shared with the Rabbinical Alliance of America and looks forward to increasing Torah and Mitzvah observance within Yerushalayim and the holy land of Israel.
