It sounds laughable.
Unfortunately, it’s the reality in Crown Heights, where they are estimating a 15,000-pound matzah shortage in the coming weeks.
With the combination of supply chain delays and a scarcity of wheat due to the war in Ukraine, the availability of matzah is dropping–and the price is soaring.
What does this mean for Crown Heights families?
Pesach, which is already one of the most expensive times of the year, is only going to become more so. While most of us will find a way to manage, our neighbors who already can’t afford to make Pesach will now have to contend with even bigger expenses.
For them, this price hike takes things from difficult to downright impossible.
Every year at the Pesach seder, we say the words “Kol Dichfin Yeitzei V’Yeichol–All who are hungry, come and eat.” This year, let’s put those words into action–starting with the people right next door.
This year, let’s make sure our neighbors can celebrate Pesach properly and without worrying about how they’ll foot the bill.
