Just a short while before he became ill, Rabbi Yehoshua Binyomin Gordon, OB”M, accepted to be the Guest Speaker in Crown Heights at the Annual Oholei Torah Dinner.
Rabbi Nosson Blumes, Director of Development said, when he approached Rabbi Gordon with the idea, his first response was even though he prefers not to speak in Crown Heights, being it’s a tough crowd to please, but this time he will make an exception, so he can follow in his father’s footsteps.
Then Rabbi Gordon further explained, that his father, Rabbi Sholom Ber Gordon, OB”M, traveled every week from New Jersey to New York, to host a radio show on WEVD benefiting Oholei Torah.
One time R’ Yehoshua asked his father why went so much out of his way for Oholei Torah, to which his father answered, “Because Oholei Torah is the Rebbe’s yeshiva.” – And for that reason, Rabbi Gordon accepted the opportunity, which was one of the last times he spoke in public.
And to even further make the connection, Rabbi Gordon took out one of his father’s handwritten notes of a radio broadcast, and read part of that broadcast during his speech.
