Over Chanukah, the ‘Rabbis’ went to many of the houses of the Released Time kids. They lit the Menorah, played a fun game of dreidel, and gave special tasty Chanuka treats.
Why do we play dreidel? When the evil Greeks decreed that the Jewish people may not learn Torah, the Jewish children would hide in caves and study. When Greek soldiers came, the Jewish children hid their Torah books and took out little dreidels. “We’re just playing, not learning Torah”, they would tell the soldiers.
Why do we eat doughnuts? It’s not just because they taste good, but because they are made with oil. That reminds us of the miracle that happened with oil, that the oil lasted for 8 days and nights.
