I am writing to emphasize the importance of our community’s participation in the upcoming June primary.
To ensure Crown Heights has a strong voice, it is essential that we register as Democrats and participate in the primary election. In New York City and Brooklyn, Democratic candidates win the general election the vast majority of the time. Consequently, while the November election is often a formality, the June primary is where our Council Members, State Senators, Assembly members, and members of Congress are effectively chosen.
This primary sets the agenda for our schools, our safety, and our מוסדות. You can only participate in this crucial process if you are registered as a Democrat. I respect that many in our community hold firm conservative values and plan to vote for the GOP in November. However, in a district where Democrats consistently win, remaining registered as a Republican excludes you from the specific election that selects our local leaders. You can remain registered as a Democrat for the primary and still vote for the candidate of your choice in the general election.
Showing up is just as important as registering. Regardless of who you vote for—even if you leave the rest of the ballot blank—the message to politicians remains the same: Crown Heights votes. Politicians respond to turnout; when we show up, they are more likely to seek us out, secure funding for our מוסדות, and ensure we have a seat at the table.
Please take a moment to register as a Democrat and encourage your friends, family, and neighbors to do the same. If we skip the primary, we hand our power away.
Let’s prove that Crown Heights shows up.
