Diana Richardson has been declared by NY1 as the winner of the 43rd Assembly district race.
With 52 percent, Richardson was declared the winner in the special election held to replace Karim Camara.
Camara resigned earlier this year to work in Governor Andrew Cuomo’s administration.
Of Richardson’s opponents, Shirley Patterson who was backed by many big-name Brooklyn Democrats, including Borough President Eric Adams, state Sen. Jesse Hamilton and former Borough President Marty Markowitz came in at 26 percent, Menachem Raitport at 24 percent, and Geoffrey Davis who had Notable endorsements of Assemblyman Dov Hikind and Movement to Protect the People, the activist group vocal in the debate over rezoning in Crown Heights had just 3.4 percent.
The district, in heavily Democratic Brooklyn, did not feature a candidate on the Democratic line since the candidate who was chosen by the local party didn’t file the required paperwork on time. Instead, three Democrats ran on other party lines in an effort to represent the neighborhoods of Crown Heights and East Flatbush.
Richardson had the backing of Comptroller Scott Stringer and several large unions, including 32BJ, 1199 SEIU and TWU Local 100.
