A stormy start to the week is on the way. Our first fall storm will bring flash flooding and dangerous winds.
Get set for a nor’easter. Steady rains will arrive Monday night around 8 p.m., and there could be wet weather all the way into Wednesday. The National Weather Service has issued flash flood watches for all of New York City for Monday night through Tuesday afternoon. Up to 4 inches of rain are expected over a 36-hour period. With Ida, we got 8 inches of rain in about 4 hours. Some flooding at subway stations is also expected, but it will be minor.
Although this storm won’t as severe as Ida, scattered flash flooding is expected on streets and highways. Basement apartment flooding is unlikely. The usual flooding spots include the FDR Drive, the West Side Highway, the Belt Parkway and the Saw Mill River Parkway. Remember never to drive or walk into a flooded area. You never know how deep it could be. It only takes six inches of water to stall a car and 12 inches of water to float a vehicle.
Strong winds are also likely with the storm. Gusts over 40 mph are likely, with the worst of it coming on Tuesday night. Watch for downed trees, and be careful near construction sites
