Sunday, 16 Av, was a historic day for the Springfield, Illinois Jewish community, where Rabbi Mendy and Sara Turen serve as the Rebbe’s Shluchim and direct the local Chabad Center.

Many local Jews, as well as guests from out of town, came together to celebrate the milestone of completing the Springfield Community Torah, dedicated in memory of Rabbi Yisroel Uziel Turen, A”H, the Shliach’s late grandfather.

Rabbi Yitzchok Raskin of Machon Stam traveled from Crown Heights to write the final letters. Close friends and supporters were honored with writing letters in the Torah.

The final three letters were written by R’ Yisroel Uziel’s three sons, Tzachi Turen from Eretz Yisroel, Zev Turen from Florida, with the last letter being written by Rabbi Eli Turen, Shliach in Chicago and Rov of the city’s Beis Moshiach synagogue.

The writing ceremony was conducted at the Turen residence, where Chabad of Springfield primarily operated from until recently. From there, a Tahlucha with lively music accompanied the Sefer Torah to the new Chabad Center, a storefront a short distance away.

At the Chabad Center, there were Hakafos with much joy and excitement as many danced with the new Torah.

Among the honored guests were Springfield Mayor Jim Langfelder and State Senator Steve McClure.
