Pesach was only three short months ago, but for the Badatz of Crown Heights, preparations for Pesach 5782 have already begun.
A group from the Crown Heights Matzah Bakery traveled on Monday to Allentown, New Jersey to begin the wheat harvest for next year’s matzah bake.
Rabbi Yosef Yeshaya Braun, Mara D’Asra of Crown Heights, headed the group, which included Rabbi Berl Levertov from CHK, and Rabbis Yitzchok Tennenbaum and Chaim Cohen of the Crown Heights Matzah Bakery.
The harvest takes place every year towards the end of Tammuz, when the summer sun is its hottest, to allow for the wheat to be completely dry as soon as it is harvested. The wheat is then carefully stored in complete dryness until its use in the bakery. Special precautions are made to ensure the wheat never comes in contact with water.
The Rov checked all of the harvest related machinery to ensure everything was perfectly clean, then proceeding to drive the actual combine harvester in order to fulfill the mitzvah in real time.
