As a part of the FJC’s large-scale renovation project, many Jewish schools and kindergartens across Ukraine are upgrading facilities and infrastructure, transforming worn out classrooms into ‘smart classes’. During Elul, the final month of the Jewish calendar, the schools are keen to show the results of their hard work.

The ‘Or Avner’ Chabad Lubavitch Jewish school in Zaporizhzhia, specializing in Hebrew and English studies, was founded in 2000 under initiative of Rabbi Nohum Erentroi and Rebbetzin Dina Erentroy. The school director Larisa Bobakova told FJC News that their ambitious renovation projects include a combined lab for experiments and practical classes in biology, anatomy, zoology, geography and chemistry: “This lab will have a full range of equipment from sample tubes and microscopes to interactive tables and a Smartboard.”

Another upgraded room will be used for physics, maths and astronomy research. The school director added: “We hope that these new labs will become a scientific center for hosting events for the Jewish community and for other local schools, thus raising the academic profile of the institution.”

Other Ukrainian schools are having new equipment ordered and also being renovated. Mariupol’s Jewish early development center is being refurbished in preparation for the new academic year. The local Jewish community confirmed that the kindergarten will be fully renewed by September 1.

The Federation of Jewish Communities of the CIS provides assistance and support to dozens of Jewish schools and preschools in the former Soviet Union states. With the help of the donors, the aim is to transform infrastructure and equip the institutions with modern tools, increasing enrolment and improving learning. Many of the students of FJC’s ‘Or Avner’ Jewish educational network go on to study at the top universities in Ukraine, Israel and the United States.
