A Few weeks ago, Mr. George “Butch” Newsom, Cincinnati Ohio, passed away at the ripe old age of 94 years old. Mr. Newsom was the first American soldier to enter Buchenwald during its’ liberation. He was the one that took pictures of the carnage that he saw, so that the world should know and never deny the truth of what happened.

To honor the memory of his father, his son, Deputy Sherrif John Newsom, spoke to the students of Yeshivas Lubavitch of Cincinnati. He shared the history of his father and showed the students – and staff – many of the pictures that his father took during the war. He stressed that doing good and spreading light is the best way to deal with darkness and evil.

A special thank you to chaplain, Rabbi Mendy Kalmenson, for coordinating the special event.

    1. Police Chaplain Rabbi Mendy

While liberating Buchenwald, Mr. Newsom met a young teenager of about 14 and became close with him. This young teenager later wrote a book about his experiences in the camps during the holocaust. He called Mr. Newsom to help fill in the blanks, as he suffered from malnutrition and could not remember certain details. Mr. Newsom helped him with his book. The name of the book is Night and this young teenager is Eli Weisel.
They communicated over the years and would meet when ever Mr. Weisel came to Cincinnati.
Mr. Newsom would go to many non Jewish schools to share his story and the story of the Jewish people during the war. He did not want people to forget, he did not want generations to grow up not knowing about what happened. He did not want these evil ways to repeat itself G-D forbid.
His son, John, became a police officer and served for over 40 years (and still serves) due in part of the fact that he hated bullies. He hated when people would use their power over others to do evil. Chief Newsom with the Warren County Sheriff office has, as did his father, a very special place in his heart for the Jewish people and has show that during his long law enforcement career.
We thank him and his father for the sacrifices they have made and for their continued support and efforts for the Jewish people.
