Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, was celebrated by a small group gathered Wednesday evening on Sherman Green to witness the lighting of a large menorah.
Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Stock of Mishkan Israel Day Camp, the event’s sponsor, told the downtown gathering about the significance of the menorah as fellow Rabbi Joseph Torenheim ascended a short stepladder to light three of the menorah candles — a prominent center candle and two of eight shorter candles designating the first days of the eight-day festival.
Later, attendees posed for photos next to the menorah and enjoyed doughnuts.
The sponsoring organization operates a summer camp in Stamford and other activities in Trumbull.
Stock said Wednesday’s ceremony was the 29th annual public celebration of Hanukkah in town.
