Tomorrow on Monday, August 1st, in New York City’s speed cameras are going to be in use 24/7. previously it was in use on weekdays, between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.

A state law signed in June by New York Governor Kathy Hochul allowed speed cameras to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Speed cameras and automated traffic enforcement are shown to reduce speeding by 72 percent, according to the city.

Since January 2021, there has been four pedestrian fatalities in Crown Heights, according to the NYCs ‘Vision Zero’ dashboard. And across the city there were 125 pedestrians fatally hit, and 17,204 pedestrians were injured in 2021 alone.

The city’s 2,000 automated speed cameras were previously authorized by the state to operate only on weekdays, between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., missing the 59 percent of traffic fatalities that occurred when the cameras were required to be turned off.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2017, speeding killed 9,717 people, accounting for more than a quarter (26%) of all traffic fatalities that year. In New York State, about 30 percent of all traffic fatalities list speeding as a contributing factor. Proactive and targeted speed enforcement is a method to reverse this trend and reduce deaths and injuries due to crashes.
