On June 22 there will be primary elections in New York City to determine who the candidates for mayor in the November 2 general election will be. To be able to participate in the primary, one must be registered to vote. Those who aren’t have until February 14 to do so.
The winner of the Democratic Party primary is expected to almost certainly win the general election in November as most New York voters are Democrats. As such, whoever wishes to take part in actually selecting the next mayor must vote in the Democrat party’s primary to decide which candidate they prefer.
Obviously in the November general election everyone will be able to vote for any candidate they wish regardless of the party they’re registered with, as party registration only pertains to primary elections where each party must determine who their candidate will be.
Registering or changing one’s party affiliation is very simple and can be done here. If you’re not sure which party you are currently registered with, it can be verified here.
