The troubling trend of increasing antisemitic hate crimes in New York City continues as police data reveals over 250 incidents were reported in 2022 alone.
Despite Mayor Eric Adams taking office in January, the spike in antisemitic crimes has not subsided, with 263 incidents reported throughout the year, averaging one every 33 hours.
Most antisemitic hate crimes against Jewish people in New York City were targeted at Orthodox or Chassidic Jews and were perpetuated by people from other minority groups, a new report published by Americans Against Antisemitism has found.
An estimated 97% of the 194 hate crimes documented were carried out by people belonging to other minority groups. Furthermore, 94% of victims in antisemitic incidences in those four years were Orthodox or Chassidic Jews, the report stated.
Of those targeted, 52% identified as Chassidic Jews and a further 42% as Orthodox Jews. 4% identified as secular and another 2% as Modern-Orthodox. A further 0.5% identified as Reform and finally, 0.5% were Israelis who did not list a denomination.
This is a significant increase from the 121 incidents reported in 2020 and 196 incidents in 2021. Jews were targeted more than any other group, with the majority of attackers being minorities.
The incidents range from violent assaults to verbal harassment, property damage, and antisemitic graffiti. This spike in antisemitic incidents mirrors the trend seen nationwide, with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) recording 2,717 incidents across the country in 2021, the highest since tracking began in 1979.
