Members of the New Haven Lubavitcher community celebrated a grand Siyum Sefer Torah this past Sunday, in the last week of Shnas Hakhel.
A joint project between Rabbi Gershon Borenstein and Rabbi Zalman Roth, the Torah was dedicated in Honor of the Rebbe, and was written periodically over the past ten years by Rabbi Roth.
The final letters were written by community members at the Roth residence, followed by a lively procession down Norton Street, with Bochurim from the Mesivta and Zal participating. A police escort ensured all ran smoothly, as everyone got a chance to dance together with the Torah.
Many families from the neighborhood came out to join this amazing event, being the first Siyum Sefer Torah in New Haven of such a grand scale. Flags and Kiki torches were distributed to children, and women marched along on the sidewalk as men and Bochurim danced to the lively music being broadcasted from the specially-brought-in Torah truck.
The happiness and enthusiasm was most befitting for one of the final Hakhel-year events to take place in New Haven.
Hakofos and a Seudas Mitzvah took place at the Yeshiva, where the Torah was welcomed, and will be used by the Yeshivas Beis Dovid Shlomo.
