When Rabbi Eliyahu Ezagui was standing outside the Chabad house in Moscow’s Bolshaya Bronya neighborhood on the first day of Chanukah he noticed a couple standing outside taking pictures. The man then approached Rabbi Ezagui and asked: “my wife’s not Jewish, but I am. Can I enter the building?”
Rabbi Ezagui immediately welcomed him inside, showed him around the building, and brought him to the office of Shliach Rabbi Yitzchok Kogan, and after a short conversation the man, a Georgian Jew, never wrapped Tefillin in his 63 years of life.
Rabbi Ezagui and a few fellow bochurim used the opportunity to wrap Tefillin on the man, light menorah, and farbreng in honor of the momentous occasion.
After making a loud Bracha together, the man explained how it was his first time ever eating kosher food.
“You shouldn’t wait until a person tells you that he’s Jewish,” said Rabbi Ezagui, “but rather go out be proactive and ask. In my case I waited until the man approached me first, the best thing to do is start a small conversation and ask them if they are Jewish.”
