Two years after members of the controversial Lev Tahor Chasidic group were expelled from a Guatemalan town located roughly midway between Guatemala City and the Pacific Ocean, the group has run into trouble yet again, as authorities executed a raid today, looking for evidence of child abuse.

According to Guatemalan news paper Prensa Libre, authorities at the Guatemala City Office of Children and Adolescents received a complaint that could involve as many as 50 to 60 children, ranging in age from babies to 17 years old.

Authorities were investigating complaints that the children were living in conditions that were described as “subhuman.”  Guatemala’s Publinews reported that some children may have been beaten while others may have been drugged.

Another source said that the raid involved a minor child who was taken illegally out of Israel and had joined the Lev Tahor group.

Six different buildings were raided by police in Guatemala City’s Zone 9.  Some Lev Tahor members objected to the action, saying they were not allowed to contact their lawyers and were told they would be shot if they attempted to call anyone.

Medical personnel have been called in to evaluate the children and if evidence of abuse is found, the children could be removed by the Attorney General’s Office to shelters.
