Eighteen Bochurim Volunteer to Go to Ukraine for ‘Merkos Shlichus’

Despite the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, 18 Chabad Yeshiva students volunteered to spend the month of Tishrei assisting local rabbis and Jewish communities with prayer services, educational programs, and food distribution. They first met with Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky for guidance.
In the shadow of the ongoing situation in Ukraine, 18 Chabad Yeshiva students will fly to Ukraine in the upcoming days to assist the local community rabbis with preparations for the month of Tishrei and its holidays.
This initiative is organized by the Merkos L’inyonei Chinuch organization, as part of the “Merkos Shlichus” project founded by the Rebbe over half a century ago.
Prior to their trip, the Chairman of the conference of Chabad emissaries and responsible for the Merkos Shlichus project, Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky, hosted the students in New York for a special preparatory meeting.
Rabbi Kotlarsky shared instructions he received from the Rebbe over the years and requested that each bochur write a detailed report.
During the meeting, the students received an overview of the crisis in Ukraine and the security measures that need to be taken. They will be traveling to the cities of Odesa, Kharkiv, Vinnytsia, Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia, Cherkasy, and Uzhgorod.
The voyage is being coordinated by the FJC’s Jewish Relief Network of Ukraine. Coordinator Itamar Wolf is equipping each yeshiva student with items they will be taking along related to the holidays, along with thousands of mezuzahs which they will install in the homes of the Jews in the communities.
The rabbis and Jewish communities in Ukraine are planning a full schedule of prayer services, festive meals, classes, and educational and cultural programs over the month of Tishrei despite the ongoing crisis. They will also be distributing thousands of meals and food packages to individuals and families across the country.
