Rabbi Alexander and Leah Namdar, Chabad emissaries in Gothenburg, Sweden, will be tried today (Tuesday) by the city’s Municipality for their homeschooling of their 11 children in the Jewish tradition, due to the lack of Jewish schools in the area.

Three years ago the Municipality forbade them from homeschooling, claiming it was against law and demanded that they be sent to the public school. Appealing the decision, they won the case and the Municipality submitted a second lawsuit, which they also lost. Today they will appear in court again, where judges will determine whether the state can permit homeschooling when special circumstances prevail.

General-Director of the European Jewish Association has called upon the Swedish Prime Minister as well as the town’s mayor to cease all legal proceedings against the Namdars, saying, “How sad and symbolic that on the eve of the International Holocaust Memorial Day, there is still a need to fight for the right of Jews to educate their children according to their faith.”
