Sixty people attended Chabad of Athens, Greece, on Sunday evening, February 11, for a lecture on the after-life by author and lecturer Rabbi Lazer Gurkow. Many of those who attended noted that the after-life is not often discussed in Judaism because we focus so much on living in this world. This makes the after-life a subject of curiosity to many.

They sat for an hour as Rabbi Gurkow described the Neshamah’s passage from this world to the next and redefined the meaning of death according to Judaism. A Q&A period was followed by refreshments, which gave people an opportunity to stay and discuss the topic further.

“The Holocaust is an important subject to the Jewish community of Greece, where a large percentage of the community was decimated by Hitler,” said Rabbi Mendel Hendel, Shliach to Athens, “this contributes to the community’s interest in the subject of the after-life.

Rabbi Gurkow spoke in English while a simultaneous interpretation was broadcasted via earphones to those who preferred to listen in Greek. “It was a wonderful turnout,” said Mrs. Nechama Hendel, Shlucha to Athens. “People walked away with a much better understanding of the Jewish of the after-life, and most important, the lecture sparked new questions which will keep the conversation going.”
