1400 Years After Vodka, Russian Rabbi Tackles Alcoholism
With Russia being the cradle of Vodka, it comes as no surprise that Russians have a penchant for excessive drinking, and alcoholism is rampant across Russia.
To combat this destructive behavior, the Russian government has turned to Rabbi Aharon Gurevich, Chabad Shliach to Moscow and Chief Chaplain of the Russian armed forces and jails, to create a rehab center which will help alcoholics and drug-addicts overcome their destructive behaviors.
In a recent meeting with state agencies, the Rabbi outlined his four-step program for prevention of abuse and treatment of those who succumbed to their vices:
1) Open and information center, providing information on institutions, programs, and professionals who provide care and rehabilitation to those who are addicted to drugs, alcohol or other dangerous substances.
2) Partner with relevant state and local agencies engaged in treatment and rehabilitation.
3) Create a new community center that will accompany the process of treatment and rehabilitation.
4) Conduct outreach aimed at preventing drug and alcohol abuse, as well as promoting a healthy lifestyle.
“We are pleased that this important social program has begun to operate, and finally we will be able to provide real help to people in need.” said Rabbi Gurevich.
