    50 years ago today…

During our yechidus before our wedding, the Rebbe promised the Kalla that even though he would be visiting the Ohel that day, 23 Elul 5726, he would make sure to be back in time to be present for the chuppa, in his room.

On the morning of 23 Elul Rabbi Chodakov called me over with a request: an important rabbi from Morocco came to visit the Rebbe that day, unannounced. Being that the Rebbe didn’t see visitors during Elul and also the Rebbe was visiting the Ohel that day, would I mind if they honored this rabbi to speak at the kabolas ponim. It was understood that this was a request from the Rebbe.

    Of course, I agreed.

The kabolas ponim took place in 770, downstairs for the men and the women in the upstairs women’s gallery (the only time this ever happened).

The visiting rabbi was quite happy with the honor he was given and enjoyed giving a speech. After 2 hours of speaking (!) the mother of the Kalla came downstairs into 770, banged her hand on the table and announced, “genug droshos, m’darf gein tzum chuppa, choson Kalla fasten! ” Enough speeches, time to go to the chuppa, the Choson and Kalla are fasting!

The visiting rabbi quickly finished his speech and they were ready for the chuppa.

As the Kalla arrived under the chuppa, the Rebbe’s car pulled up at the curb of 770 and the Rebbe went straight to his room for the chuppa as promised…!

This beautiful portrait was taken by the wedding photographer at the moment the Rebbe emerged from the car.
