Though forecasters say the city is in for a mild winter this year, the Department of Sanitation is gearing up for the season early by hiring emergency snow laborers to combat ice and snow, the agency said.

The per diem workers will be paid $13.50 an hour, and $20.25 for overtime, to clear sidewalks, crosswalks, fire hydrants and bus stops after big storms, the department said in a citywide bulletin looking for applicants, and are “vital to keeping the city moving,” said Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia.

Snow laborers must be 18 years old and “capable of performing heavy physical labor,” the listing said.

Anyone interested in applying can do so at a local sanitation garage from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays — there are 60 located throughout the five boroughs — or at four Department of Transportation locations: the Flatbush Yard at 2900 Flatbush Ave. in Brooklyn, the Bronx Yard at Moshulu Ave. and Broadway in the Bronx and either the Kew Loop Yard (78-88 Park Drive East) or the Harper Street Yard (31-11 Harper St.) in Queens.

To register for the job, all applicants must bring a social security card, two forms of identification with a copy of each and two small photos. For more information, visit the DSNY website.
