Yud Gimmel Iyar – The Rebbe’s Brother
This past Shabbos, the 13th of Iyar was the Yartzeit of the Rebbe’s younger brother Reb Ysiroel Aryeh Leib. We present our readers with a short biography on his outstanding life • Full Story
Born to Reb Levik and Rebbetzin Chana on the third of Sivan in the year 5669 in the city of Nikolayev, Reb Yisroel Aryeh Leib was named after his uncle (Rebbetzin Chana’s brother) Rabbi Yisroel Leib Yanovsky who has passed in his early years.
Already in the early years of his life, Reb Yisroel was known as a clever boy. At the age of three he would already know Mishnayos by heart. At a specific opportunity the Rebbe related to him “He has the head of the Tzemach Tzedek”.
In the year 5699, Reb Yiroel Aryeh Leib got married to Rebbetzin Genya Roitman. In 5705 they gave birth to their daughter Dallyah.
In the year 5712 on the 13th of Iyar, at the young age of 46 Reb Yisroel Aryeh leib returned his soul to the creator. Without anyone to recite Kaddish over him. The Rebbe took this upon himself and would say Kaddish on the day of his Yartzeit.
The Rebbe made sure to hide Reb Yisroel Aryeh Leib’s passing from Rebbetzin Chana, till her own passing the Rebbe would still write letters and send them from Reb Yisroel Aryeh Leib’s home. As if it would be he writing the letter.
Upon countless occasions the Rebbe enjoyed to hear that people were visiting the gravesite of his brother which is found in the holy city of Tzfas, and occasionally requested individuals going to Israel to please visit the gravesite and see if any repairs were needed.
In his memory was founded the RYAL Institute led by Professor Rabbi Yisroel Silman. An organization linking science and Moshiach.
