Today is 25 years.

No, today WOULD HAVE been 25 years. 25 years since the wedding anniversary of Hershel OBM and Josephine Basher. A night of celebration is suddenly replaced by a nightmare of tears and sorrow, as a widow sits Shiva with seven young children at her side.

There are wistful dreams, shattered dreams, and memories. Memories of a husband, a family man, a man of strength and kindness, patience and understanding. A man of chessed, someone who formed a pillar of a community, of a family. A man who was abruptly taken from this world, just 5 short days before his 25th wedding anniversary.

But we won’t let this anniversary pass without stepping in to show our love.

Someone will plan a meal, one to honor Hershel’s memory. Someone will order food- all of Hershel’s personal favorites. A cake will be delivered, frosted and designed by a local bakery. The family will sit down and eat, though Hershel won’t be there, smiling in his usual spot at the head of the table.

Instead, we will be there. There in spirit, with our words of comfort, with our packages of care, with our donations.

Together, we will come forward and support Josephine and her 7 young children. Together, we will help ease just a little bit of their pain, by helping with the financial burden. Hershel had been the sole provider for his family. He was always there to help others – let’s be there now to help his family.
