With great sadness we inform you of the passing of Chacham Rabbi Yaakov Michalashvilli, OB”M, of Kfar Chabad. Chacham Yaakov was a respected leader of Gruzinisher Jewry. Less than a month ago Chacham Yaakov celebrated his 85th birthday.
Chacham Yaakov served as a Rov in Gruzia (Georgia) with mesiras nefesh, and was one of the first Chassidim to leave the USSR, with his two brothers, in 5727. He immediately got involved in strengthening the community of Georgian Jews, and sending visas for those still behind the Iron Curtain.
Chacham Yaakov was mekushar to the Rebbe: for Tishrei 5728 The Rebbe paid for his trip to the Rebbe. As a sofer he merited to write a Sefer Torah in honor of The Rebbe, in 770.
