Rabbis and Rebbetzins of the Rabbinical Council of Victoria (Melbourne, Australia) met last week with Rabbi Jung of the Ani Maamin Foundation.
Rabbi Pinchos Jung is a world-renowned lecturer and Jewish education expert, with decades of experience in a wide range of institutions.
He is visiting Melbourne from the US to present seminars to train parents and teachers how to teach the foundations of our faith to their school-aged students and children, which he sees as an vital but missing element of Jewish education today.
The Rabbis and Rebbetzins discussed practical ways to help children understand complex philosophical issues such as free-will, Creation and the importance of prayer, as well as ways to combat apathy towards Judaism amongst our youth.
Rabbi Jung stressed the importance of setting the tone in the home in a genuine and enthusiastic manner to inspire children to want to observe the Commandments, the Mitzvot. He said that, ideally, belief in God should be ‘caught, not taught.’
Rabbi Jung thanked the Rabbis and Rebbetzins for sharing their varied experiences in different areas of Chinuch (education). ‘These opportunities to share ideas, challenges and methods help us brainstorm solutions to our educational problems. I learn something new everywhere I go.’
