Chabad of Springfield, Illinois, directed by Rabbi and Mrs. Mendy Turen, organized a public Menorah lighting at the local mall, for the second time in Springfield. Over 150 people came out for the special event, a surprisingly large number for the small community. The attendees appreciated the opportunity to display their Jewish pride by partaking in this experience.
The event was honored with the attendance of the mayor of Springfield, Jim Langfelder, who spoke of his Jewish background and was honored with lighting the Shamash. Other dignitaries participated in the event, including; Senator Sam McCann and Alderman Andrew Proctor.
The state capital’s Jewish community enjoyed a buffet of fresh donuts, Latkes and hot drinks.
Rabbi Turen also addressed the crowd on the significance of the holiday of Chanukah, stressing the imminence of Moshiach’s coming and encouraged everyone to add in something additional.
The crowd was thrilled to hear a few words from the Shliach, Rabbi Eli Turen, who traveled all the way from Chicago for this special event.
