At least 12,000 nurses at seven hospitals in New York City are threatening to strike after their union contract expired at the end of last year. A strike date is set for 9 January.

As thousands of New York City nurses prepared to strike on Monday, a tentative agreement was reached with New York-Presbyterian Hospital just hours before the contract was set to expire.

The agreement, which affects 4,000 nurses, now awaits ratification. However, contract talks between nurses and seven other hospitals will resume this week in an effort to avoid a strike by 12,000 nurses as early as next Monday, January 9.

The contracts for these nurses expired on Tuesday. The New York State Nurses Association has issued a 10-day notice of the intended strike, as required by law, in the event that an agreement is not reached.

The nurses are seeking safe staffing levels, better wages, no cuts to their health coverage, and health and safety protections.

They are also calling for community benefits such as funding programs to recruit and train nurses from within the communities they serve.

The seven hospitals at risk of a strike include Montefiore, Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai Morningside and West, Maimonides, BronxCare, Richmond University Medical Center, and Flushing Hospital Medical Center.

Hospital representatives have stated that they hope to reach agreements before a strike, but are prepared to bring in outside workers as a precaution due to the high patient volume resulting from the triple health threat.

Four additional hospitals, Interfaith medical center, Kingsbrook Jewish medical center, the Brooklyn hospital center, and Wyckoff Heights medical center, representing 1,200 nurses with the New York State Nurses Association are still in the process of voting but are expected to authorize a strike as well.
