New Jersey synagogues were placed on alert Thursday afternoon after the FBI said it had “received credible information of a broad threat,” to the Jewish houses of worship.

“We ask at this time that you take all security precautions to protect your community and facility,” FBI Newark wrote on its social media pages. “We will share more information as soon as we can. Stay alert. In case of emergency call police.”

The FBI did not release any further information on the nature of the threats but said it was “taking a proactive measure with this warning while investigative processes are carried out.”

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said city officials were reaching out to local synagogues and would be placing officers at each of the city’s seven locations as well as extra foot patrols in the “broader Jewish community till we have more information from the FBI.”

Gov. Phil Murphy said he had reached out to the FBI, New Jersey Attorney General’s Office and the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness on the situation.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and are working with local law enforcement to ensure that all houses of worship are protected,” Murphy said in a tweet.

“I have been briefed about threats to synagogues in New Jersey. There is currently no related threat in New York. We will keep monitoring the situation closely,” New York State Governor Kathy Hochul said on twitter. “Hatred, threats, or violence toward Jewish communities is unacceptable. We will always stand with our Jewish neighbors.”

NYPD issues statement after FBI warned of “credible information” about a nonspecific but widescale threat to synagogues in New Jersey: “The NYPD is aware of an FBI Alert of “credible information” of a broad threat to synagogues in New Jersey,” the NYPD has stated in a statement. “In an abundance of caution, the NYPD’s Intelligence and Counterterrorism Bureaus are working alongside the Joint Terrorism Task Force and the FBI to ensure the safety and well-being of in every area that encompasses our Jewish citizens and synagogues here in New York City and the tri-state area.”
