On Thursday, Benjamin Netanyahu was inaugurated as the prime minister of Israel, leading the most right-wing and religiously conservative government in the country’s history. His sixth term as prime minister follows a period of political instability caused by five consecutive elections since 2019.

His new coalition government is made up of 64 seats in the Knesset from six political parties – Likud, UTJ, Shas, Noam, Otzma Yehudit, and Religious Zionism.

Netanyahu is the country’s longest serving prime minister, having held office from 2009 until 2021 and a stint in the 1990s. He was ousted from office last year after four deadlocked elections by a coalition of eight parties solely united in their opposition to his rule while on trial for corruption.

Netanyahu’s government published its platform, which stated that “the Jewish people have exclusive and indisputable rights” over the entirety of Israel and the Palestinian territories and will advance settlement construction in the West Bank. That includes legalizing dozens of outposts and a commitment to annex the entire territory.

Netanyahu promised to focus on expanding settlements in the West Bank, provide significant subsidies to its ultra-Orthodox allies, and undertake significant reform of the judicial system.

Netanyahu’s previous governments were strong supporters of Israel’s settlement enterprise in the West Bank, and this is expected to intensify under the new government. There are around 500,000 Israelis living in Jewish settlements in the West Bank, alongside approximately 2.5 million Palestinians.
