A unique conference on Moshiach, Torah and science will take place at Beit Maiersdorf on the Mount Scopus campus of Hebrew University at 5:00 p.m., Sunday, April 29. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.

The theme of this year’s conference is “For You Will Be a Land of Desire” (Malachi 3:12). Speakers at the conference will discuss various unifying theories in modern science that have relevance to the Era of Moshiach. In addition, there will be a special focus on world events since the Persian Gulf War and the ensuing era of peace between the major world powers with an emphasis on the current tensions between them related to the civil war in Syria. This year is the 26th anniversary of the meeting at the United Nations where the heads of state of the major world powers made a joint declaration regarding a new era of peace and cooperation among the nations of the world. The Rebbe MHM identified this declaration as the beginning of the fulfillment of the prophecy of Isaiah that in the Messianic Era the nations of the world will “beat their swords into plowshares.”

The keynote speaker at this year’s conference will be Dr. Jonathan Bentwich, Chief Neuroscientist at “Bliss,” who will speak on “A New Paradigm for Science: Putting Kedusha back into the Equation.”

A special guest speaker will be Avi Taub, Founder and Director of Shefa Yamim, a multi-commodity, exploration mining company founded in 1999 which has discovered sapphires, rubies, Carmel sapphires, hibonites, large natural moissanite crystals and diamonds on Mount Carmel and in the Kishon River catchment. He and his son Yosef Yitzchok will do a presentation on “Precious Stones in the Land of Israel.” This will be followed with a lecture by Dr. Amir Mosri, who will discuss “Geormorphology and the Geulah.” They will emphasize the deep connection between the Land of Israel and the people of Israel—who are called “a land of desire” by the prophets.

HaRav Avishay Ifargon, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Chabad Kfar Saba, former military intelligence officer and an expert on the military situation in the Middle East will speak on “The United States and the ‘Axis of Evil’ and the Implications for Israel.”

HaRav Michael Shlomo Abichid, director of Torah Ohr Institute of Beitar Ilit will address the conference, as will HaRav Dovid Rosner, emissary of the Rebbe MHM in Jerusalem and lecturer on Torah and science at Ohr Chaya Institute.

The conference is an annual project of the Rabbi Yisroel Aryeh Leib (RYAL) Research Institute on Moshiach and the Sciences of New York which has been organizing such conferences since 1992, and is dedicated to the memory of the youngest brother of the Lubavitcher Rebbe MHM, Rabbi Yisroel Aryeh Leib Schneerson whose yahrtzeit is that day.

Rabbi Yisroel Aryeh Leib was known as a scholar in Chabad Chassidic philosophy and was a mathematician by profession. He held a position in the department of mathematical physics at the University of Liverpool, England until he passed away in 1952.

“Rabbi Yisroel Aryeh Leib was an inspiration to me personally as I saw in his life a genuine coexistence of Torah and science,” explained Professor Shimon Silman, founder and director of the RYAL Institute and himself a professor of mathematics at Touro College in New York. He founded the institute in 1993 with the approval and blessing of the Rebbe MHM. Since then they have held these conferences annually in various locations in the U.S., Canada and Israel. Prof. Silman will speak on “A System of Logic for Messianic Phenomena.”

Internationally renowned religious Jewish scientists who spoke at these conferences include Professor Yirmiyahu Branover, former director of the Magnetohydrodynamics Laboratory of Ben Gurion University, Professor Yakov Friedman of the Jerusalem College of Technology who extended Einstein’s theory of relativity, the late Professor Alvin Radkowsky who designed the nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers etc. for the United States Navy, and the late Dr. Naftali Berg who was the director of research of the Advanced Technology Office of the U.S. Department of Defense.

In 2010 Prof. Silman published a book titled Scientific Thought in Messianic Times compiled from the lectures at the conferences up to that time.
