As of Motzoei Shabbos, Eshel – Hachnosas Orchim had 5,800 guests registered in their care, with another 200 arriving since, bringing the total to a whopping 6,000 guests! We set out to discover what stands behind this phenomenal organization, and how it is managed:
Crown Heights Residents: The Chassidim of the Rebbe, who open their hearts, homes and pockets to provide for the guests with whatever they can, be it by providing a place to sleep, a place to eat, a donation or even by just letting that guest skip them in line without getting mad…
Reb Sholom Ber Drizin: A local Crown Heights resident, a G’vir with a big heart, is the main sponsor of the needs of the guests during Tishrei, both sponsoring part of the tickets of those coming to the Rebbe, and sponsoring most of the Gashmiyus department of Eshel.
Rabbi Mendy Hendel: The director of Eshel, and a long time community activist, Rabbi Hendel is busy year round creating a better future for Crown Heights, with schools and other programs, but when Tishrei comes around, he has an additional burden, ensuring the smooth operation of Eshel, by fundraising the full cost and supervising that it is done properly.
Hanhala Ruchins: Starting after Pesach, a team of Rabbonim, Mashpiim and Roshei Yeshivos begin planning the schedule for Tishrei, ensuring the guests have what to learn, who to learn with, and where to learn, so their month is fully utilized for what is truly important.
Kitchen Staff: Nothing is more important than food, and providing 18,000 meals every day is no easy feat for the dedicated kitchen staff that work around the clock, 24 hours a day, to cook and prepare wholesome and delicious meals for the guests.
Guest Services: Whether it’s building a bed, replacing a mattress, giving a key, cleaning a flooded basement, or driving a feverish guest at 3:00am, a team of volunteers is always on call to provide the guests with any need that may arise, they can be seen at any time of the day or night, shuttling between the various residences to ensure that everything is under control.
