With great sadness we inform you of the tragic passing of Rabbi Yonah Avtzon, OB”M, director of Sichos in English and a world-renowned Shadchan. He passed away Wednesday morning, 3 Shevat. Rabbi Avtzon was 61-years-old.

He was the son-in-law of Rabbi Aaron Chazan, OB”M, who was a symbol of Mesiras Nefesh in the former Soviet Union.

In 5738 (1978), a small group of students at 770 felt a need to respond to the ever-widening circle of students and adults who identified as Lubavitcher chassidim, but could not understand the Rebbe’s talks because of the language barrier. Those students began to translate the Rebbe’s talks and to circulate them throughout the Crown Heights community.

As the demand for these translations spread, the Rebbe’s talks were sent out around the world, and there was a need to formalize the organizational process. It was then that SIE – Sichos In English – was born. Rabbi Yonah Avtzon assumed the directorship of the organization.

Hundreds of Shiduchim around the world, were created with the help of Rabbi Avtzon.

He is survived by his wife, Rivkah (nee Chazan), and children; Levi Avtzon – South Africa; Chanie Wolf – Crown Heights; Shmuly Avtzon – Crown Heights; Mushky Eidelman – Crown Heights; Sheina Oster – Crown Heights; Stery Goldberg – Crown Heights; Chenny, Zalmy, Sruly, Sholom Ber, Meir and Leah.

He is also survived by his siblings, Adela Bernstein, Leibel Avtzon, Esther Blau, Yossi Avtzon, Riva Kaplinsky, Dina Borenstein, Gershon Avtzon, Sholom Avtzon, Mordechai Avtzon, Devi Baumgarten, Sternie Chesney, Shainy Tiefenbrun, Lazer Avtzon and Chanie Zirkind.

The Levaya will take place tomorrow, Thursday, at Shomrei Hadas in Boro Park at 10:45 am and passing by 770 about 12:00 pm.

Shiva will take place at 541 Crown St.
