Mendel was the son of the famed Chosid Reb Meir and Sima Chasya Itkin, OB”M, of Crown Heights.

He was a beloved member of the Sydney community, involved in teaching, and encouraged many to increase in Shiurim and daven with a Minyan. He was a daily attendee of the Sydney Kollel.

Following the news of his passing many former students took to social media and posted messages of their experiences.

Last week a story of dollars and the Rebbe laughing out went ‘viral’ on social media, leading to the understanding of the Rebbes words some 26 years later. The subject of the video was future marriage of R’ Mendel to his wife.

He is survived by his wife Aviva (nee Amzalak) and children Heshy Itkin and Yossi Itkin of California, Zalman Lever of Crown Heights, Chaya Witkes of Yerushalayim, Devorah Leah JosephChaim Lever and Esther Lever and Meir Itkin of Sydney, Australia.

He was predeceased by his brother, Rabbi Chaim Shneur Zalman Itkin, OB”M, of Hamilton, Canada, whose 10th yartzeit will be this Shabbos.

The Levaya will take place on Monday at 1 pm at the Chevra Kadisha in Sydney, Australia.

Shiva will be observed in Sydney until Sunday morning and in New York until Friday afternoon.

Mrs. Shana Tiechtel will be sitting Shiva at 405 Crown Street.

Thank you for taking me under your wings of knowledge and boundless wisdom of the past, alive for today and tomorrow.

You and your wonderful family’s warmth, welcoming, affection and friendship was beautiful and heart warming.

I am told, that when someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure. Then Mendel, I am rich.

I am sad and I grief, you are no more, but thankful and grateful that you were, and you shared your brief journey with me.

Rest in Peace, Zichron’cha Le’bracha. Mori. Ori. Mendel.
