With great sadness we inform you of the passing of R’ Chaim Mayer Minkowitz, OB”M, a longtime member of the Montreal Lubavitch community. He passed away on 2 Adar, at the age of 90 years old.
R’ Chaim Mayer was originally from village of Nevel in Russia, as a young boy he survived the war in Samarkand, eventually learning in the Lubavitch Yeshiva of Brunoy, France.
In Paris, he was ordained as a shochet and worked for a short period in Ireland. Upon his return to France, he went into business with R’ Shloime Shimanovitz to own the largest kosher chicken processing outlet at the time.
After marrying Faigle, he settled in Montreal, Canada a young and vibrant Lubavitch community in 1951.
R’ Chaim Mayer immediately became a very active member of the Lubavitch community in Montreal, as Gabai and Baal Tefillah for close to 60 years.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mrs. Faygel Minkowitz, their children R’ Refoel Minkowitz – Teaneck, NJ; R’ Yitzchok Minkowitz – Milan, Italy; R’ Aaron Minkowitz – Miami Beach, FL; Mrs. Chana Diament – Montreal, Canada; R’ Yosef Minkowitz – Toronto, Canada; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The Levaya will pass by the Lubavitch Yeshiva Montreal, the Ohel in Queens. Final resting place will be at Har Hazeisim Yerusholayim Ir Hakodesh (Section 4, Division 5).
